Does anyone know the importance of this date? Quick! Before reading further!
If you didn't guess my birthday, shame on you! I've only been counting down the dates for the last month or so. I turned 21 on this, my latest birthday. And of course I didn't drink a drop of anything alcoholic. Pregnant women can't do that, ya know. Not that I think it was any major loss, since I'm not keen on the flavor of alcohol.
Clint suggested we do something unique for my birthday, which turned out to be visiting the local botanical garden. Neither of us had ever been to one before, so it was a new experience. And one we both enjoyed. I'm not the outdoorsy type, but Clint is, so I think he may have even enjoyed it more than I. Strange, that.
A botanical garden is apparently more than just a "garden." This particular garden sits on 110 acres of land and boasts both man-made and natural gardens. We didn't arrive until 4:00 p.m., and the . . . resort? . . . is only open until 5:00 p.m., so we had to take a truncated tour of the land rather than see everything all in one blow. All in all, we covered a lot of area and saw most of everything, including a water garden that was crawling with ducks, geese, and water snakes. One of the geese had a nest. By about the second stop on the little pamphlet map, I was wishing we'd brought a camera to take photos of things. We did decide that we would go back to finish walking all the trails and paths and explore the remaining gardens. There were about seven or eight we hadn't seen yet. And we're going to take pictures next time.
Later we hit up the mall because Clint was seriously craving the food from the Chinese place they have there, and we played in the arcade a bit. Then it was off to Best Buy to pick up a movie. There weren't any playing at the theater that either of us particularly wanted to see. I chose Little Black Book, which is most definitely a chick flick. And it was hilarious at that. I like the end because the girl *doesn't* get the guy, but is still happy. There's also a major, unexpected twist in the movie that totally caught me off-guard.
We thought we'd be tired by the end of the movie, since we were awakened early with several phone callers wishing me a happy birthday. Luck was with us, though, and both of us were still pretty awake.
So we went to Outback for dinner. I was extremely unimpressed. I used to go to Outback quite a bit when I lived in SC, and I was always impressed with the food and service, and the price. I've only been twice since I moved to AL. I don't remember my first visit very well, but this second visit has spoiled Outback for all time. First of all, the menu is about half the size it used to be. Not only that, but Outback's specialty is supposed to be steak, right? Outback Steakhouse? Why did they only offer four kinds of steak? My personal favorite, a New York Strip, only came in fourteen ounces and boasted a ludicrous price of nineteen dollars. ?! I also remember being served the pumpernickle bread with every meal, but I had to ask for it, and the first loaf was stale. Luckily, the second loaf was extremely fresh and reciprocally delicious. My steak was overcooked. As in, WAY overcooked. I asked for medium-well, but got dry leather. The outside had some burned places. I'm not really a complainer, so I just asked for some A-1 and *didn't* ask for a box at the end of the meal.
When did Outback start having the same menu prices as Lonestar? I remember Outback as casual dining. Steak is expensive, but nineteen dollars a plate is ridiculous. The service wasn't bad, but I've certainly had better.
Anyway, later we went car shopping (this was late at night when there are no sales people to bother you--much easier to do) at a few places, and found a few cars that look as though they'll make good family cars (haha, J., two of them were Pontiacs), if they ask for the right price. And to end the night, we went to UAH and sat by the water. There's a decent-sized pond there with lighted fountains surrounded by trees and some stone benches. We camped on one of those for a while just to talk. There were lots (and lots) of ducks moving around trying to ignore our presence, and I spotted a couple of snakes in the water. There was also something resembling an alligator head floating on the water, but we couldn't really distinguish what it was. We concurred that it couldn't be an alligator, though, because the head would have been too big, and we'd probably see a little of its back protruding as well (though not necessarily). Either way, whatever it was, it wasn't moving, so it didn't bother us.
I liked it. I've had more exciting birthdays, for sure, but it was a lot of fun in a quiet way.

Happy Birthday! Belated, I know, and I apologize. It sounds like you had a nice, and dare I say romanitc, birthday. I've found myself as displeased with Outback as you. It used to be great, now the selection and the price is just horrible. I'd rather go to O'Charlies for a steak now. They tend to be a lot better, and decently priced. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this next year and what it brings you as much as you enjoyed your birthday, and hopefully maybe more.
Happy Late Birthday Avril!
Sounds like you had a fairly pleasant day : )
I havent heard of 'Little Black Book' til now , thank you :)
I'm sorry to hear of your experience with the 19 dollar leather steak at the Outback.
I gave up long ago on them - Unfortunately I wasn't surprised to hear that it wasn't all that great - BUT its even worse that it all happened on your day :(
If you get a chance , I dont know if they have these in AL - but if they do and you like great steak for a reasonable price try here v
http://www.texasroadhouse.com/TRHintro_html.html
This place has GREAT steaks - and they totally out-do Outback by far!
Take care & stay well
:)
as much as you were dreading my incoherent ramblings...i'm back and happy birthday!!!! haha..pontiacs....was it the new g6 or the gto reissue? i'm kinda warming up to the gto now. it hit me all wrong at first, but i finally saw one up close and personal, and got a ride around the block from the owner....not bad. i still hate the sunfire though....i got stuck with one as a rental car in pittsburgh, for that funeral i was at. awful, just awful. slow, terrible handling, blind spots galore, uncomfortable seats...just a bad ride through and through. the trucks were passing me going up the mountains and i had the throttle to the floor!
anyways...sounds like it was a full fun day. :)
j.h.
J, you just don't give up, huh? I happen to *like* my Sunfire, blind spots and all. No, they did NOT total it out, so there go all your fantasies. I can't remember the names of all the cars we looked at, I just know I saw a couple of Pontiacs I really liked. When I go back to get prices and take test drives, I'll write them down for you so you can see what my tastes are like. Well, sort of. My tastes were only half the equation this time, as I had to make sure it had child safety locks, four doors, lots of trunk space, V-4 (save on gas), et cetera. Speed has never been a concern of mine, nor pick-up. My seats are comfortable, and the limited space in the backseat means fewer people ask for rides. I like that. I had a Silverado as a rental (full-size, crew cab, V-8, whatever) and wasn't impressed with it, other than I noticed fewer blind spots and the leather seats were rather nice. And it was easier to lug all the laundry to the laundromat. I felt every bump not once, but ten times. I hate sitting so high off the road, makes me feel like I'm gonna tip over (especially the way my husband drives), the brakes were stiff, the gas pedal stuck (it had been used once before, it's an '05). It sucked.
Avril
Let me try to get all these in the order I received them.
Robert, I sincerely dislike O'Charlie's. I ate there once at the request of a friend of mine and wasted a lot of money. Their prices are outrageous and the food sucks. Maybe it's just the one they have here? I don't know, but a lot of people certainly do rave about it.
All4Eyez, yes, I've heard of the Texas Roadhouse, but they don't have them in AL. They have one in SC, which is where I ate at one, and it was *very* good. Luckily, we have a steakhouse here that is almost exactly the same, right down to the peanut shells on the floor. Logan's, I think is the name of it. But we have an even better restaurant called Lonestar, which I would have gone to if I'd known the prices at Outback had risen to the same price. I chose Outback because the steak is (well, was) good, and because I thought the prices would be much lower.
Avril
we have one other thing in common as i despise trucks and suvs. suv is really a misnomer. it's a made up marketing name to trick people into thinking they aren't paying top dollar for a truck. awful vehicles, imho. i'm a car person and the lower it is to the ground the better....i like to be able to feel the balance of the car, and take fast corners....and you just can't do that in a truck or suv......that's why people flip them all the time...well that and the fact that they are unstable and top heavy and people drive them fast and recklessly like they were in a porsche. so yeah my review of a silverado would be somewhat similar to yours.
hey, you can't blame me for trying to get you into a volvo, can you?? lol.:)
j.h.
LOL
i think i drive like J
fast corners?....thats like 60 around a bend right?
LOL
but id NEVER drive a volvo
and ive never driven a pontiac of any kind
although i used to want a grand am - but I like automatic
too much time to shift , and by the time they shift theyre Grand Am - Im GONE!
i used to drive my ford bronco like a race car and i NEVER flipped it
i liked being above everyone because i could see ahead of them by far
plus , when they seen me coming up - they got outta the way! LOL
I had a bumper sticker on it that said - "Drive it like you stole it"
the cops here LOVED that (LOL)
my sister lives in SC - but she never told me there was a Texas Roadhouse close by - i wonder? - Shes in Augusta.
I won't argue tastes, but I've NEVER had bad food at O'charlies. Maybe the one you went to just sucks. I don't know. But it doesn't matter.
Now, since the topic has shifted to cars I thought I'd weigh in. I absolutely love my Honda Civic EX Special Edition. Especially in tight curves. But I must admit my dream car is a toss up between the 2005 Mustang GT and the BMW 740 sl. It's nice to dream.
What IS it with people and that new Mustang? I think the thing is hideous. I loved the '02s and '03s and '04s, but this '05 thing is just awful.
I rode in an '02 Mustang when I visited Texas. I loved it. Only I'd want an automatic, as I can't really drive a stick for anything.
Avril
that's probably 'cause you too young. the new mustang has taken all the best designs of the late 60's mustangs when they were at their best. so it's a rehash updated version of an old design.
those last few years were chick cars. seriously. maybe that's why you like 'em better?
i think they are really cool, myself! if i wasn't already in my 330ci and almost paid off, i'd seriously consider the gt. i'd look like steve mcqueen, lol.:)
what do you think of the new gt40 called the ford gt? now that is one awesome car, that i might even pick over a 911 rsr gt3...seriously.
j.h.
Robert there loves the new Mustang too, so that rules out the young theory. The chick-car theory is ruled out because my friend Dalea loves the new mustangs too. I think maybe it all comes down to personal taste. Who'd'a thunk?? ;)
I've never heard of the Ford whatever-it-is you like. YOU like Ford???
And not Pontiac?
::rolling eyes emphatically::
Avril
well there is little debate on late 90's up to the last few years of mustangs being chick cars. everyone thought so, even ford...hence the remodeling of the mustang to the new one. i don't know how young or old Robert is, but guys who like cars..... pretty much universally like cool car designs, and this one counts as cool as it has that 68 shelby cobra gt-500 look to it a bit. i don't know your friend either but all chicks don't have to like chick cars. some chicks like good designs also.:)
yeah i like two fords...the gt and the mustang gt. i do respect ford for their long motorsports history and they held the most wins in formula one with their engines, until ferrari recently/finally took that title away.
i also like pontiacs, but only about 1964 to around the 70's. they are doing better now i'll admit, but they have a long way to go to make me forget about those awful grand prixs, grand ams, and sunfires...yuck, lol!:)
j.h.
Just for the record, I'm twenty. But I did drive a '65 mustang in high school. It only had the straight six in it, which was a bummer, but it looked beautiful...until my brother wrecked it when I was on vacation in California. I still haven't forgiven him. Oh, and the gt is sweet. And I love the new mustang commercial with Steve McQueene..."If you build, he will come." It's great. I'm one of the few peope in my age group who knows who is. Odd thing is, I've never seen Bullet. I need to pick it up.
Two small corrections to my last...It's McQueen and Bullit. Apparently I am not immune to all the faults of youth.
J., you're implying here that the designs I like are no good . . . but that is a matter of personal taste. And I guess not everyone can have taste as good as mine. ;)
Avril
LOL - this debate is quite funny - if i do say so....
I think (lol) - i dont want anyone to get hostile here (lol)
seriously though - maybe i shouldnt say anything (?)
but i cant help it!
i think if i RACED anyone of your cars - mine wood WIN!
Of course - with me driving it (lol , sssshhh)
Driving an AUTOMATIC - NEVER a stick
I'm not too young to know how - i just perfer automatic
Mustangs are cool though - i do like them - not the new look of them though
The SPEED of them
Can anyone GUESS what I drive????
LOL
(Hint) its not a HONDA (ew) - FORD : ) , Or PONTIAC and DEFINATELY not a TOYOTA (hahahaha)
...just wonderin'
On a personal note - I like the MITSUBISHI ( spelling ?) commercial - the one with the handling test - with 'Ballroom Blitz' playing in the backround
~thats a cool commercial
I was debating on if I want one of them - I think that wood be my second choice - after the car im driving now
: )
Haha. I didn't choose the Sunfire for speed or pickup. Luckily, I don't think about stuff like that, so I can just pick something I like driving and something I think looks pretty (I am SUCH a female cliche). And yes, you'd win in a race against my Sunfire, which is a V-4 and has trouble getting past 100 MPH (though I've seen it go 110, don't get me wrong). Only the reason I think you'll win is because I don't race. Something about speed that appeals to most people just doesn't appeal to me.
Sooooo, I'm guessing by your comment that you drive a Mitsubishi? It's not one of those new ugly Sion things, is it? No, wait, something else makes the Sion, it's just sold on the Mitsubishi lot here. Clint adores those, but I think they're hideous. I can't even figure out if it's supposed to be a van or an SUV. What is it with these new concept cars? Like the truck that looks like an El Camino they came out with last year? And the truck that turns into an SUV (I think it's called the Avalanche)?
-Ave
Mitsubishi? Yeah, they built the planes that dropped all the bombs on Pearl Harbor. I'm still a little pissed about that.
I had NO IDEA about the planes they built to drop bombs on Pearl Harbor -
Ive already been advised to stay away from Mitsubishi anyhow
So there will probably be NO CHANCE in me getting one
Sion - NO WAY! LOL
I agree - HOW UGLY!!!
It's a box with a motor! LOL
I really dont like the SUV's now either - too , too big!
I dont street race - I just like to get places fast (LOL)
Im a very careful and considerate driver
I would have never done what that jerk did to you and cause an accident
NO WAY!
I would like to race in an amateur time race at a track though , that would be pretty cool
Nope - i dont drive an ugly Sion - or a death trap Mitsubishi....
LOL
Ave, naw we are just having a debate in fun...poking at each others likes and dislikes...or at least that's what i was doing....but i'm pretty sure you were doing the same? sorry if it came across as an attack of any sort.
Robert, you just scored big points in my book! mcqueen is a god. watch lemans if you haven't...talk about cool! bullit is good also, but a little slow, imho. the mustang scene is good though and well worth it. yeah i'd be upset also if my brother wrecked my 65 pony.
scion is toyota.
mitsubishi may have made engines and planes for japan during ww2, but they are just a company not a nation that makes decisions to go to war, etc. plus that's all in the past. the japanese are making good stuff, imho, and don't let history stop you from buying a car, if you like it. for example the hippy icon car the beetle was designed by the nazis. it didn't stop the peace loving hippies from loving those air cooled beetles.
j.h.
Toyota SUCKS!
my car is Japanese -made
;)
Isn't Toyota Japanese? Yeah, it is. Hmm. You don't drive that Japanese car, anyway. What is it then? Is it stock, or custom? I'm guessing not a civic, unless it's an Si, cause that's the only stock civic faster than mine. Of course I'm assuming it is stock.
By the way, I don't drive VW either. Damn tree hugging hippies...lol. No, my dislike of mitsubishi and any other auto maker is personal taste.
Toyota - NO
I guess my car is stock -
Nissan Altima
wooooohooooo
0 to 70 in less than a minute
YEEHAW
:)
I like Nissan
I want one of them power cell cars
That would be cool!
J., of COURSE I was just poking fun at you (now THERE'S a southern phrase). It's one of my favorite pastimes. ;D
Witty conversation with you keeps me on my toes.
Ave
25 comments...wow......is this a record? should we try for 100, lol?:)
j.h.
All4eyez, my friend Nic is absolutely in LOVE with Nissan Maximas. He was thrilled when his first car turned out to be one, even though I think it's a '94 or something. Altima was also a beloved choice of his. I think they'd make nice family cars, even though according to one of AOL's little news blurbs, Maximas are the second-most stolen cars in the U.S.
Altimas also made the list, but they were way down on it.
Avril
PS: Psssssst! J, this makes twenty-six, and I have no idea if it's a record. I had no clue this entry would prompt so many responses. Maybe I should mention Pontiac more often? lol
#27.
NICE! Maximas are really cool cars.
They are possibly very nice family cars.
One of the most stolen?
Thats weird...
I could see why they would want to be stolen though!
LOL
Maxima is senior as the Altima is its junior
Both awesome cars
My sister has one of each - 2005
Even the Nissan sports car (i forget the name)
Its their version of a race car
Its wicked cool!
Even a '94 Maxima is sweet!
the reason certain hondas and nissans and toyotas are usually on the "most stolen" lists is because they are chopped up for parts. the accord for example...is such a popular car and so many are sold that the sheer numbers of them out there drives a market for stolen car parts. these cars aren't resold usually as their resell values are almost nothing being stolen, etc. reselling of stolen cars have to be over a certain dollar amount to make it worthwhile for the criminals. for example, you wouldn't counterfeit 1 dollar or 5 dollar bills would you? of course not because it's a waste of time, resources, and energy. same goes for cars.
when i was young and i saw those lists, i would always think.....if i was a car thief i'd steal porsches, ferraris, etc. those rarely if ever get stolen for parts as the people who can afford to buy those high end cars, can also afford to fix them without stolen parts. make sense?
